Split vs Full Body Workout

What is better?

While spending long hours on the gym floor and talking to gym members, I noticed that split workouts were a trendy exercise structure. Let's see if it's beneficial or if people do it just because they think they should do it.

Muscle Growth Graph

We will start with an understanding that: every muscle group should be trained twice a week at a minimum. No particular muscle group should be trained two days in a row because muscles need 48 hours in between to recover. Since we have seven days a week, we have four workout days and three rest days overall for every muscle group.

Now, let's get back to history for a short reference. Pioneer bodybuilders used to come to the gym 3-4 times a week after work for a full-body workout. Each workout lasted 3-4 hours. That was way too long because they had no time for other things, such as spending time with their families, doing their chores, etc. Over time they've learned to come to the gym every day for only one hour. That became possible when they split their workout by training major muscle groups on different days. That is where split workouts came from.

I've noticed that people, who only come to the gym twice a week, do the split as well. It was very hard for them or nearly impossible to make any progress. As soon as this mistake was corrected, they started seeing the results.

Full-body workout exercises

Not all of us are bodybuilders. Not all workout techniques require focusing on every little muscle, trying to get it into the right proportion with others. If you can only come to the gym 2-3 times a week, focusing on compound exercises that work all the large muscle groups and joints is better. The most important thing is to: regularly train all of them together.

You'd be surprised what fantastic progress you can achieve coming to the gym only three times a week for a one-hour training session if you structure your exercises wisely and do a full body workout every time.
